The Axecollector took apart a a 9-volt battery, and instead of exploding and covering him with acid (my original thought) he found six "AAAA" batteries. I found a listing for "AAAA" in the Wikipedia, and it says that the batteries are uncommon and might be hard to find.
I decided to duplicate his experiment to rip apart a brand-name battery, carefully using needle-nose pliars to peel back the metal shell from the bottom.

Once I took the plastic wrapping off, I could unravel the 6 "AAAA" (quadruple-A) batteries that were connected in series.

I snipped one off using wire cuttters, and compared it to a "AAA" and "AA" battery:
They are a bit smaller than "AAA" batteries, and might be usable in a pinch.
